C&G Emission Reductions at a Glance

When a polluter takes steps to reduce its emissions, such as increasing energy efficiency or producing renewable energy, it creates emission reductions.  Polluters that engage in these actions are able to report these reductions, and some can receive credit for them as well.  Emission reduction credits (ERCs) reward those who take action to reduce their pollutant emissions and therefore encourage pollution reduction efforts.  Awarding credits for emission reductions, which can be bought and sold, provides a market incentive to find the most cost-effective way to reduce emissions.

The Cleaner and Greener® program uses the free market to reduce pollution by participating in the emissions trading system.  When we buy an allowance or emission reduction credit, we "retire" it without emitting any pollution.  Once retired, allowances and credits can no longer be bought, sold, or used to offset pollution.  You can choose to have your contribution to the Cleaner and Greener® Program used to buy and retire emission reduction credits.  By donating in this way, you are reducing the amount of pollution that is discharged to the atmosphere, rewarding those who take action to reduce their pollutant emissions, and helping to stimulate the development of a market for emissions reduction.  Cleaner and Greener® is a program of Leonardo Academy Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization.  For this reason, all contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent allowable under law.
