Sustainable Transportation Recognition
The Cleaner and Greener® Sustainable Transportation Program was designed to recognize voluntary efforts and strategies by fleet operators and organizations that actively seek to reduce the emissions from their diesel vehicles and equipment. These strategies include the implementation of EPA and CARB verified emission control technologies such as retrofit devices, cleaner fuels, verified idle reduction technologies, verified aerodynamic technologies, certified engine repowers, and/or vehicle or equipment replacement.
Eligible vehicles, engines and equipment may include: buses, medium-duty or heavy-duty trucks, marine engines, locomotives and non-road engines and equipment or vehicles used in construction, handling of cargo, agriculture, mining or energy production.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies vehicle exhaust emissions among air pollutants that create the highest risk to public health, particularly to older adults, children and those susceptible to or experiencing respiratory-related illnesses or adverse health effects, including asthma and COPD. In addition to health problems, these pollutants also contribute to urban smog, acid rain, poor air quality and decreased visibility. Vehicle emissions include carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10).
